Sterling Strauser (1907-1995) is a highly regarded painter of the impressionist/modernist genre. In his studios in East Stroudsburg, PA and Nashville, TN, he created innovative works of art that are now desired in serious art collections. His self-taught style produced paintings that have been described as original, imaginative, abstract and bold of color.
Collections of his works are displayed in several museums: Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, PA; Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA; Everhart Museum, Scranton, PA; Cheekwood Museum and Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN; Maier Museum of Art, Lynchburg, VA; American Museum, Bath, England and the Sterling Strauser Gallery (Kemp Library), East Stroudsburg University, East Stroudsburg, PA.
The Clown with Stale Bread (title written by Sterling Strauser 1978 on back of painting) is an example of the artist's creative impressionist style. The bold colors are impressive. The framed painting measures 25 inches across by 49 inches in height. The brown frame is 5/8 inch width all around. It is oil painted on masonite. The painting is signed by Strauser, 1978.
