The original photograph that this print is based on was taken in 1879 at the Walpi Pueblo in Arizona.
The Specific Location
The photo was captured in the historical Hopi village of Walpi, which sits atop First Mesa in northeastern Arizona. At the time, members of the neighboring Navajo tribe frequently traveled to and interacted with the Hopi villages for trade and ceremonial purposes. This is where the photographer set up his portrait area.
When It Was Taken
While the print in your frame says "1913" (which marks the date the collection was formally re-cataloged by government archives), the camera shutter actually snapped in 1879. John K. Hillers took the portrait as part of the official Bureau of American Ethnology expeditions mapping the Southwest during that year.
The historical registry records also note that the subject was known in field logs as "Big Navajo".
