San Clemente Island goats are a critically endangered goat breed that developed feral on San Clemente Island off the coast of Southern California. After 150 years in the 1980s they were determined to be a nuisance to the native plants and wildlife of the island and were relocated or exterminated until they were completely removed from the island. A small number of goats were preserved by breeders and provide the foundation of the breed today - which numbers appx 1800 goats.
Small to medium in size, refined and deer like, alert to predators and adaptive to a wide range of vegetation these goats bring a historic presence to the farm. They excel at brush clearance, mild meat production and small farm milk production. They are smaller than most meat breeds but their meat is not gamey and very flavorful. Their milk production is less than a dairy breed but the high butterfat content compensates and their milk is excellent for making cheese and yogurt.
We have several goats available both does and bucklings. Individual does and doelings are $400 each. Individual bucks and bucklings are $300 each. Breeding trios - two does and one buck are $1000.
All our goats are registered with the San Clemente Island Goat Breeders Association which is a wonderful supportive organization promoting the SCI goat and helping the people who raise them.
