The New Motor | Red Hook, Brooklyn | Full-time, on-site | Salaried
ABOUT US
The New Motor is a custom architectural millwork and metal fabrication shop in Red Hook, Brooklyn. For about ten years we've designed, engineered, built and installed high-end millwork and metalwork for architects, interior designers, retail brands and general contractors. Our work ranges from flagship retail interiors to residential townhouses, and nearly all of it is one-off.
We don't cut corners. We pay serious attention to detail, and we stand behind everything that leaves the shop.
THE ROLE
We're hiring a Shop Manager to own production. You'll take over the production schedule and the day-to-day running of the floor. You'll report to the owners and work closely with our project managers. This is a management role for someone who came up building. You need to know millwork well enough to spot a problem in a shop drawing before it hits the floor, and to tell a crew member exactly how to fix a problem.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
- The production schedule: sequencing jobs, assigning crew, and hitting delivery and install dates.
- Running the floor day to day, including morning check-ins, tracking progress against the schedule, and solving problems as they come up.
- Reviewing shop drawings with the PMs for buildability and turning them into a build plan, cut lists and task breakdowns.
- Quality control at every stage, from material receiving through finishing, so nothing leaves the shop that we wouldn't put our name on.
- Coordinating the handoffs between millwork, metal fabrication, finishing and install.
- Tracking lead times and managing inventory.
- Keeping machinery and tooling maintained and the shop clean, organized and safe.
- Tracking actual hours by job and feeding them back to estimating so future bids are accurate.
- Training and developing the crew, and helping hire as we grow.
WHAT YOU BRING
- 8+ years in architectural millwork or high-end custom cabinetry, with at least 3 years as a shop foreman, lead or production manager.
- Fluency reading architectural and shop drawings.
- Deep knowledge of sheet goods, solid wood, veneers, hardware and finishes, and of premium-grade construction standards.
- Experience scheduling a shop running several custom jobs at once with tight deadlines.
- Comfort with a computer: scheduling tools, spreadsheets, email and shared drawings.
- A track record of leading a crew people want to work for.
NICE TO HAVE
- Metal fabrication experience (steel, stainless, aluminum, brass).
- CNC programming or operation.
- Field installation experience, especially in occupied or high-end retail spaces.
- Experience working with GCs, architects and designers on commercial projects.
WHO YOU ARE
- Calm and level-headed, especially when a deadline gets tight.
- Positive and personable, with good energy that sets the tone on the floor.
- Has a sense of humor.
- Resourceful. You figure things out and find a way to make it work.
- Driven to follow through and do whatever it takes to get the job done right.
- A self-starter who sees what needs doing and does it without being asked.
COMPENSATION AND DETAILS
- Salary: Based on experience.
- Full-time, on-site at our shop in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
- Schedule: Monday - Friday, plus weekends when required.
- Benefits: Paid time off and 401k.
