“Updated Barn Survivor” 1953 Studebaker Commander Coupe Deluxe, Coral Red and Ivory Mist
Everything is intact (or upgraded) from when it was parked in a Texas barn around 1978! It was refreshed somewhere along it’s history - floorpans were repaired and it was repainted the original, stunning factory Coral Red with Ivory Mist roof. The paint shows it’s age but has kept the car virtually rust-free so many years later.
This “survivor” is mostly original but with all new brake parts including lines, front disc brakes and a late-model Ford 8” rear axle. The 6V ignition is all new, along with a 6V “booster” fuel pump, new v-belt and radiator hoses, coolant flushed and replaced, recent oil & filter change. The fuel tank and lines have been cleaned, and new fuel gauge sending unit installed. The carpet is new, along with full-floor rubber sound isolation. New radial tires are installed along with front seat belts for added comfort and security and it has all new front bearings and delrin rear bushings plus a new muffler and tailpipe. Horn, turn signals and radio presently don't work, needs heater control valve.
The 1953 Commander was one of the first personal coupes, significantly inspired by the Porsche 356. Its aerodynamic shape was way ahead of its time, setting land speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats and dominating the La Carrera Panamericana race. The Loewy - Bourke Coupe’s groundbreaking design is timeless; this 73 year old car still garners admiration and praise wherever it goes even though most lookers have never seen one before. A local photographer/enthusiast was inspired to create this for it: https://youtu.be/PnASLq7jNj4?is=PFAEBbfkBguPDJ1k
The car starts instantly, runs smoothly, stops on a dime, and glides quietly. It's a virtual trip back in time (but with better brakes!), so much fun to drive.
I bought this car for love of its design, just to drive and enjoy locally, “as is”. I hate to sell her but I've taken on too many projects and I need the space! I'm open to offers.
So bye-bye to my first-love 53 Stude, may she always have a good home and run forever!
