The story:
This is an old television station satellite transmission van. I’m the third owner. My friend Bruce worked for the tv station and won the van in a sealed bid auction only available to employees of the tv station. He sold the two Onan generators in the back and had the satellite tower removed. He had a welder seal the floor opening with plate steel. He had a carpenter square out the roof with framing to seal the open hole from the tower. The carpenter installed a white rubber membrane roof that looks a bit rough but it does not leak. There are also 2 new powered roof vents installed on the ceiling that have not been fed power yet.
Bruce then hired my cabinet shop to build the twin xl bed that expands to a queen bed. I also built all of the cabinetry and flip up desk that you see in the photos and the wall for the rear garage and the unique pullout kitchen drawer. All the cabinets feature soft close hidden European style door hinges and heavy duty magnets to keep the doors closed when rolling down the road.
Bruce sold me the van when he was facing a stiff mechanic bill to find an electrical drain that was somehow related to the old wiring for the original conversion performed by Harris Broadcast Division in Florence Kentucky in January 1996.
Well, it took me 2 years for me to find a smart,methodical, willing mechanic to remove no all non-stock wiring from the conversion and consequently find the drain. The guy probably pulled 300 feet of wire out of the vehicle. No more drain. No more conversion wiring. No more battery drain.
It’s runs and shifts beautifully.
So here is some of the other things about the van.
6000# U-haul receiver hitch
Electric locks and windows on 2 front doors. Electric lock on rear door.
Nice front seats with 2 armrests on each.
Seatbelts operational.
NO abs or check engine lights.
All hazards, blinkers, headlights work.
There is a good spare tire under the rear end. A heavy duty jack, the original tire wrench, a jack plate for soft ground and a tire plug kit is in the back.
All door locks and hatch door locks work and keys work.
Healthy battery under the hood with a shut off switch in case you want to mothball the vehicle for a few months.
New Windshield and wipers just installed in August 2026.
The ladder on the back door is very solid.
The modified queen mattress is clean, sanitary, and comes with the vehicle.
The Conway Twitty cassette tape in the radio comes with the vehicle.
The new camp-Chef propane stove in the pullout kitchen Comes with the vehicle.
After the wiring project, I also had the plugs, wires, and distributor replaced.
The information about the motor rebuild and transmission rebuild was given to Bruce by the tv station manager.
The tv station decided to replace the van after being purchased by a different media company and vastly changing industry technology.
These days the satellite towers weigh 2 tons less and now use digital technologies paired with services like starlink and require less power.
As you can see, the interior is Not complete. This is intentional. Completing the interior would be as simple as: installing a few lights;hooking up the 2 fans;insulating ; covering the ceiling and walls; priming and painting the various cabinetry.
