I purchased this from a mechanic in Boise. He rebuilt the engine at 197k with a a new crankshaft and had the block, crank & rods machine matched for new bearings along with replacement of ancillary items, oil pump, etc.
I invested in the following to make it whole, safe and reliable, in that order.
All new tie rods, alternator, A/T tires, alignment, rear brakes & cylinders, u-joints, hubs, catalytic converter, O2 sensor, fuel filter, NGK spark plugs, widow weatherstrip, AC repair / recharge, hatch seals, front speakers, and more things I’ve forgotten. Not cheap.
Everything works as it should. No leaks, smoke or noises. The glass, headliner, seats are nice. The LSi model is equipped with AC, dual airbags, OBD II, different door panels and upholstery, cruise control, rear wiper / washer/ defogger and alloy wheels.
All of the lights, panel gauges/ indicator lights and accessories work perfectly.
The fluids in the differentials, transfer case are fresh. The transmission fluid, pan gasket and filter are new.
The battery is healthy and there’s new wipers, fresh motor oil/ filter brake fluid and a coolant. The frame is solid, shocks steering and are suspension tight.
There isn’t any mechanical repair needed for this vehicle! The only issues are cosmetic. I averaged 22.5 mpg even with some 4 wheeling during a trip. Both 4 high and low range work perfectly as does the transmission 4 speeds with a selectable overdrive.
Cons: there are a couple small rust bubble on the paint at the B pillar and gas door area. I have matching touch up paint but never got around to grinding or prepping those areas.
This is a second car for fun but runs nice enough to be a daily driver, an RV tow vehicle ( new Aisin manual hubs ), or a great start for modified build. It’s not all hacked up.
We would typically drive it 50-100 mile RT to explore local forest service roads to trailheads on weekends.
The plates are good till 2028. I have the owner’s manual, receipts for all my work and will provide the name of the mechanic that rebuilt the engine. There’s about 3000 miles on the engine with 3 oil changes. So, it’s broken in well and absolutely cared for and reliable.
