For sale is a pair of rare RA Labs Reference 3a speakers made in Bellingham, Mass in the 1990’s.
The Reference 3a was designed by Roy Allison who designed the legendary Acoustic Research AR-3a. After working at AR, Allison started Allison Acoustics and later RA Labs. The Reference 3a was a mid-90’s reimagining of the famous AR-3a.
I have tested these speakers against the original AR-3a and the sound is remarkably similar. The very low bass is slightly better on the R3a and very high frequencies are also slightly better. These are rare and don’t have the same name recognition as the AR-3a, but the sound is very similar.
When I received these, the tweeters were destroyed. I sourced original tweeters for these, so these are 100% original R3a parts. As a precaution, I replaced the capacitors in the tweeter and midrange circuits. I also replaced the 8 rubber feet as they had cracked and disintegrated. Cabinets are in overall excellent condition with just minor scratches on the tops of the vinyl wrap.
