A PLACE TO LIVE IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS! ESCAPE POD! First photo is leaving Maine. 1979 Tartan 37 Sloop with very-difficult-to-get slip in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Hull has been completely redone, barrier coated and awlgripped. Newfound stainless portlights (a $10,000.00 installation). Rudder rebuilt, centerboard rebuilt. All new thru hulls and valves. All lines/halyards/sheets new in the last few years. Not used in the Caribbean (got sidetracked). New Muir 1250 windlass to install. New refrigeration to install. Fuel tank removed and refurbished as new. New batteries. LP Gas stove and oven. 42 HP diesel with less than 1400hrs (1200 reported when I bought it and started a refit). AIS Radio. Tons of gear and tools. We took this from Winterport, across the Gulf of Maine, through the Canal on Oct. 28th a couple years ago and loaded it in Portsmouth, R.I. onto a freighter to save wear and tear taking it down on its own bottom. Airfare from Boston to St. Thomas on Jetblue is nonstop and variable, but we've gotten it for as little as $145 one way this year. Headed back down on Saturday, as a matter of fact. Fly down, taxi to your slip, grab the boat and have a blast. Sail the BVI, Culebra and Vieques and the South Shore of Puerto Rico (bit of a beat to wind coming back). THIS is the way to enjoy the Caribbean. Sleeps 5, but we've had more onboard. Comes with 1 hour 6hp Yamaha outboard on a 1 hr. 11'(?) Achilles bought new in Ellsworth at Chase Leavitt. Good sails. I wouldn't hesitate to take it to Panama or Grenada. Or back to the U.S. The least expensive refitted home/camp you could find in the Caribbean. Needs odds and ends but no giant capital expenditures.
