The seller is very interested in foreign languages and has often purchased newspapers overseas which somehow caught his eye or captured his imagination. These three fall into that category.
Each of these items was bought in person and ‘on the ground’ in these places.
FIRST ONE on the right in the photo, is in the BASQUE language of northwest Spain and southwest France, in the Pyrenees region. The language is not know to belong to any other language group anywhere in the world. It is difficult for outsiders to pronounce, let alone speak well.
The U.S. has significant Basque populations in California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, and New Mexico. During earlier periods of heavy immigration from Europe many Basques brought their pastoral sheep raising skills to our mountainous regions, similar to their homelands.
SECOND ONE on the left in the photo, is the INUIT News from the Canadian regions of Nunavik and Nunavut. The seller has been to both areas for photography. The printed Inuit language uses a language of “sylabbics”; their name for ‘an alphabet’ is “ quaniujasqpait “ and the name for their writing system is “abugida”.
THIRD PAIR in the foreground, is two editions of the Cuba state government newspaper, Granma.
That name has three connection in Cuban Spanish :
In CUBA "GRANMA refers to a few significant things. First, it's the name of the yacht that carried Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries from Mexico to Cuba in 1956, launching the Cuban Revolution. Second, it's also the name of the official daily newspaper of the Cuban Communist Party. Finally, Granma is the name of one of the provinces in Cuba, with Bayamo as its capital.
This listing for a Cuban publication in no way condones or supports the regime ruling there at any time since 1960. I purchased these two copies of Granma solely as a traveler's curiosity.
All newspapers are in the ‘tabloid’ format, approximately 12” and 15” tall when opened.
