The Seeburg Select-A-Rhythm (Model SAR-1) is a pioneering, analog preset drum machine produced in Melrose Park, Illinois during the mid-to-late 1960s. Originally designed to sit atop or be built into electronic organs as a rhythmic accompaniment tool, it played a landmark role in the evolution of mass-produced rhythm boxes. The unit has18 authentic rhythms alongside a built-in metronome feature. Users over the years have learned they can also depress multiple buttons simultaneously to combine and layer different beats. The unit also has a Volume control and Tempo Control.
During the 1960s, the Seeburg SAR-1 was marketed primarily as a premium home-entertainment accompaniment accessory for keyboardists. At the time, the concept of a pre-programmed, fully transistorized rhythm box was groundbreaking. Marketing pushed the convenience of hands-free, push-button automation. Advertisements focused on how a solo player could instantly sound like a full ensemble without needing complex programming knowledge—you simply pressed a button, adjusted the tempo knob, and toggled the music on or off using the included foot pedal.
In later years, the SAR-1 units became a highly sought-after secret weapon for pioneers of synthpunk, post-punk, and experimental ambient music in the late 1970s and 1980s - Robin Gibb (The Bee Gees), Moby, Space-Age Pop & Lounge Devotees, Martin Rev are among many users of this unique piece of music history!

Condition: Please see the photos, but overall this is a nice example of a working unit. All 18 modes operate as does the volume and tempo controls. The unit was tested and serviced by DALAUDIO. We will be happy to plug in the unit to an amplifier to show its operation to serious interested buyers. About the only thing to report that is not working is the tempo light, everything else is working.
