Feast your eyes on this trove of vintage photographs from a region we hear all too little about in the so-called international news, between the desertic north and temperate south of this vast continent: Tropical Africa.
While the photos and some language use are a bit quaint, this book is by no means irrelevant to a current understanding of the region. To the contrary, it covers sub-Saharan African history right up to the post-colonial transition to independent states—very much ongoing at the time of writing, and of which the authors where in the midst.
Great for elective reading, as a companion or substitute for the now sadly unavailable Annenberg CPB series “The Africans” (1985), or a reliable reference for those engaged in serious scholarship when a quick review of essentials is needed.
Valuable maps and appendices.
Condition is very good+: only minor wear to the front and back covers and upper and lower spine, as tends to happen over time to books unless they're kept in a vault; the binding is strong and perfectly intact; the text block is fine.
Makes for a good coffee table conversation starter while not being over-sized or unwieldy. Good for your reading club, coffee klatch, or as a gift for the historically minded or the burgeoning Africa studies major in your life.
