Want to collaborate on some functional scifi artwork, use it as props in a short film, then make youtube how-to videos on how we did it?
I'm making a no-budget comedy scifi/spy film. I'm starting with just a phone camera and my DIY greenscreen.
As I get ready to involve other people, though, I'll need some equipment, so I'll be making some DIY film and audio equipment using supplies from home improvement and dollar stores.
There are lots of tutorials on youtube to make:
_ Parabolic microphone
_ Shotgun mic
_ Camera stabilizers such as steadicam
_ Boom mics with the faux fur
_ Light reflectors
My plan is to start with the easiest projects.
And of course, they'll just end up as working but ugly PVC monstrosities.
So here's the twist:
Let's lean into the DIY ugliness, tweak them to look like alien technology.
and to use them as props in scenes.
Shotgun mics -> ray guns
Parabolic mic -> radio dish
You get it.
A friend recently organized and curated a science fiction art exhibit. I thought it was a brilliant idea, and the artwork was creative and surprising.
So, want to collaborate with me to:
_ Make some working equipment that looks like aliens made it
_ Exhibit them in an art show
_ Make youtube videos on how we did it
_ and get end credits for an IMDB page if the film gets accepted by a festival. There are festivals for Short film, Feature length -- even trailers!
I've previously made crude PVC or wooden things like membrane clarinet, tubulum, oil funnel shawm, dobro, bouzouki and lots of hand drums, but it was all just functional.
I can also make lots of things with software and electronics.
I'm a piano player, standup comic, unsuccessful science fiction writer (lots of nice replies, but was only ever offered to get paid in magazine copies, and once for $50) and software developer.
I've been making original comedy music videos for 20 years, since back when greenscreen was hard to do.
For this kind of scifi movie, we don't need good actors, so I'm really just looking for responses from people who are interested in and know how to do artistic or tech work...
...but if you're an artist or tech person who is also willing to act, that would be very welcome.
If you've read this far and are interested, but don't have tech or hands-on artistic skills, you're still welcome to be involved if you're willing to do yoeman work like holding a boom mic, moving lighting equipment, checking continuity, or learning stuff like light temperature.
Other filmmakers who are interested in collaborating are also very welcome.

I'm starting by making a sizzle reel to explain the concept to everyone involved, and ideally and "unliklely" get some financial backing:
