“Spring Comes to Gambell Village” c.1973 an Award-Winning Woodcut by the late Alaskan artist Dale DeArmond (American, 1914–2006)
The print is numbered (#1/30), signed and dated “Dale DeArmond-imp-1973” in pencil below. Presented with an olive-toned mat in a dark wooden frame. Light frame wear consistent with age.
The frame measures 30" tall x 24.75" wide
The sight view measures 22" tall x 17" wide
A colorful woodcut bringing together dancers, drummers, sea mammals, birds and boats in a lively compartmented composition. Blue, orange and ochre shapes stand out against a deep black field, with a radiant sun and stars above. The arrangement evokes the seasonal activity of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island.
Gambell was a place DeArmond knew through her travels and village teaching, and this design became one of her recognized achievements. The artist-family catalog records a first-place and purchase award in the block-printing category of the 1973 Salon of Alaskan Artists competition, followed by first place for block printing at the Alaska Museum in 1974. It was also included in Dale DeArmond—A First Book Collection of Her Prints.
Provenance: From a distinguished private collection. Collection history indicates that the collector was a longtime friend of Rie Muñoz and assembled substantial holdings of works by both Muñoz and Dale DeArmond. A significant portion of this consignment—including the complete Nondalton Legends series and numerous other DeArmond works offered in this auction—is represented as having come directly from Muñoz’s personal collection. Muñoz and DeArmond shared a close friendship and longstanding ties to Juneau’s artistic community, giving this group a personal connection to both artists.
