Depicting the finish of the 1,150 mile
1987 Iditarod Sled Dog Race where
Susan Butcher (American, 1954-2006) kept her lead over Rick Swenson (American, b.1950) as the 2 mushers and their dog teams, furiously raced across the icy Alaskan Arctic landscape, and Bering Sea, with the sun setting across the Arctic horizon, to the Gold Rush town of Nome
“Charles Gause discovered his passion for the arts during his youth in Yakima, Washington. Before his relocation to Alaska, Gause pursued formal education in design and art history at Yakima Valley College. In the spring of 1975, he traveled north to Fairbanks and found employment on the North Slope for the Trans-Alaska pipeline project. Seeking a lifestyle that allowed for time and inspiration in his creative work, he left the slope and eventually settled in Eagle River with his wife, Joyce, where he focused on capturing realistic Alaskan landscapes, wilderness themes, and the Iditarod trail.”
“Charles Gause is an American Artist known for his Alaskan scenes and wildlife. One of the most striking characteristics of the art of Charles Gause is the strong narrative element, the sense it creates of a story which expands beyond the frame. Viewers think about what brought the figures in a scene, whether animal or human, to that spot and they reflect on what will happen next. The artwork of Charles Gause has been collected worldwide and his original paintings are sought after for permanent collections.”
