The collection traces principally to Fred Kelsey Koken (1938-2024), a longtime Juneau resident, stockbroker, conservation-minded sportsman, and lifelong member of Safari Club International. Koken’s international hunting began by 1965, when he and his father hunted high-altitude Himalayan brown bears in Asia. Over approximately five decades, he traveled and hunted throughout North America, Asia and Africa, assembling an extensive collection of game animals from some of the world’s most remote regions.
Koken had a particular passion for mountain sheep and achieved both the North American Grand Slam and World Slam of Wild Sheep. His collection included examples from across North America and Asia, together with African predators, antelope, buffalo and other international game.
Seeking to make the collection educationally accessible, Koken established the Southeast Alaska Museum of Natural History through the Fred K. Koken Educational Foundation. Located at his Auke Bay residence, the appointment-only museum welcomed school groups and other visitors for firsthand instruction about wildlife from around the world. Its dramatic displays included a towering assemblage of international sheep and major habitat dioramas depicting an African lion with Cape buffalo and a leopard with impala.
In 2014, Koken donated the museum’s approximately 62 full-body mounts to the American Bald Eagle Foundation in Haines. He expressed a desire for the collection to remain in Southeast Alaska and to continue serving an educational purpose through an organization with a similar mission. The collection thereafter became part of the American Bald Eagle Foundation’s extensive natural history holdings.

This auction represents a rare opportunity to acquire specimens from a cohesive, historically documented international collection assembled by an accomplished hunter and exhibited at two Southeast Alaska educational institutions.
More importantly, the auction will directly support the continuing work of the American Bald Eagle Foundation. Founded in Haines in 1982, the Foundation has spent more than four decades advancing wildlife conservation and public education in Southeast Alaska. Today, it operates a natural history museum containing more than 200 specimens and a live raptor center that provides lifelong care for non-releasable birds of prey.

DOMESTIC & INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING:
This auction has highly limited shipping availability. The vast majority of full-body taxidermy mounts, oversized specimens, and other large or specialized lots cannot be shipped in-house. Please review each individual lot description carefully before bidding.
For lots that are not eligible for in-house shipping but are otherwise legally transferable, buyers may coordinate directly with qualified third-party shipping and/or crating providers at their own expense. Alaska Premier Auctions & Appraisals does not arrange or assume responsibility for third-party shipping services. Daily storage fees of $25 per item per day will begin accruing after the three-day retrieval window while items remain in our possession. Please come prepared with any necessary tools and qualified labor; we do not provide removal or loadout assistance for oversized items.
Certain wildlife specimens in this auction are subject to additional legal restrictions and may only be purchased by Alaska residents and may not be shipped or transferred outside the State of Alaska under any circumstances. These restrictions are clearly stated in the applicable lot descriptions. A valid Alaska driver’s license or other acceptable government-issued proof of Alaska residency must be presented at pickup. Any winning bidder who does not meet an applicable Alaska-residency requirement will have the purchase canceled and will be responsible for the monetary difference between their high bid and the ultimate underbidder contract price, plus a $100 administrative fee, without exception.
For Alaska-resident-only lots, third-party shipping or crating may only be used for transportation within Alaska. Anyone found to be attempting to use a third-party shipper, freight forwarder, intermediary, or other service to move a restricted specimen outside Alaska will have the purchase canceled and will be responsible for the monetary difference between their high bid and the ultimate underbidder contract price, plus a $100 administrative fee, without exception.
Limited in-house shipping remains available for smaller, reasonably shippable lots that are not otherwise restricted. Shipping costs for eligible items are based on packed size, weight, destination, labor, required handling, and packaging materials. Lot dimensions do not include packaging. We may utilize USPS, UPS, Alaska Air Cargo, or other appropriate carriers when practical and legally permissible.
Do not assume an item can be shipped simply because you are able to place a bid. Please review the individual lot description and the Shipping section of our Terms and Conditions for applicable restrictions and buyer responsibilities. If you are uncertain whether a particular lot can be shipped, transported by a third party, or transferred outside Alaska, please contact us before bidding.
Shipping quotes require sufficient advance notice and will be provided as promptly as possible but cannot be guaranteed. We greatly appreciate quote requests being submitted at least two business days before the auction closes.
