Are you doing everything you can to protect your family financially and prepare for the future?
You may already have a 401(k), IRA, stocks, bonds, savings, real estate, and life insurance. That's a great start.
But having multiple financial assets doesn't necessarily mean they are working together as part of a complete financial strategy.
I’m a licensed financial professional offering personalized financial education and planning support for individuals and families.
My goal is not to replace what you already have it is to help identify potential gaps and explore whether additional strategies may complement your existing financial plan.
1️⃣ LIFE INSURANCE WITH LIVING BENEFITS
Why consider it?
1. It has Living Benefits: If a critical, chronic, or terminal illness prevents you from working, you can access death benefit while you're still living, helping cover expenses like your mortgage, bills, or debts without draining your savings.
2. It has Death Benefit: If the person pass away while the policy is active, the beneficiaries receive the death benefit, generally income-tax-free.
45-year-old person, $1M coverage for ~ $130/month.
I've put this policy in place for my own family and for many of my clients, and I'm happy to walk you through how it works.
Quick FAQ: I already have medical insurance, do I need this too?
Medical insurance covers healthcare costs (doctor visits, treatments, medications). Term Life with Living Benefits is different, it provides financial protection, giving you access to funds during a serious illness and ensuring your loved ones are taken care of if the person pass away.
Employer-provided life insurance can be an important benefit, but it may not provide enough coverage for your family's long-term needs, and coverage can be tied to your employment.
Example: If you earn $120,000 per year and your employer provides 2x salary in group life insurance, your coverage would be approximately $240,000.
Would $240,000 be enough to replace your income, pay the mortgage, fund your children's education, and support your family if something happened to you?
A personal life insurance strategy may provide:
• Additional income-replacement protection
• Coverage that is not solely dependent on your employer
• Death benefit protection for your family
• Potential living benefits for qualifying critical, chronic, or terminal illnesses, depending on the policy
Example: A family with a $500,000 mortgage, two children, and significant future education and retirement needs may want to evaluate whether their current life insurance coverage is sufficient.
2️⃣ 401(k) & RETIREMENT ACCOUNT REVIEW
A 401(k) is an excellent retirement-saving tool, especially when your employer provides a matching contribution.
However, your 401(k) is only one part of your overall financial strategy.
Depending on your plan, accessing money before retirement can involve taxes and potentially an additional 10% tax, and 401(k) loans are subject to plan rules and generally have a maximum of $50,000.
Example: Suppose you contribute $25,000 per year to your 401(k) and your employer matches a portion of your contribution.
One approach is to capture the full employer match and then evaluate whether additional savings should be diversified among other strategies based on your goals, tax situation, risk tolerance, and time horizon.
This may include exploring:
• Tax-deferred retirement accounts
• Tax-advantaged life insurance strategies
• Roth strategies
• Annuity/lifetime-income strategies
• Other investment and savings options
The goal is not necessarily to contribute less to your 401(k), it is to determine whether your overall savings strategy is appropriately diversified.
3️⃣ INDEXED UNIVERSAL LIFE (IUL)
An IUL is a permanent life insurance product that combines life insurance protection with a cash-value component.
Depending on the policy, it may provide:
• Cash-value accumulation potential linked to an external market index
• A floor that can limit credited interest from negative index performance, subject to policy terms
• Access to available cash value during your lifetime
• Potential tax advantages when properly structured and managed
• Death benefit protection
• Potential living benefits for qualifying illnesses, depending on the policy
Example: Imagine a 35-year-old parent wants to save an additional $10,000 per year beyond their retirement-plan contributions.
Instead of putting every additional dollar into one type of account, they could evaluate whether allocating a portion toward a properly designed life insurance strategy makes sense for their long-term goals.
The strategy could potentially provide life insurance protection today while building cash value for future needs such as retirement or education, subject to policy performance, charges, funding, and contract terms.
Important: IULs are not the same as investing directly in the stock market. They have costs, limitations, and policy requirements that should be reviewed carefully before purchase.
4️⃣ OLD 401(k) / IRA & ANNUITY REVIEW
Have you changed jobs over the years and left your old 401(k) accounts behind?
You may have several retirement accounts exposed to market fluctuations without a clear plan for creating retirement income.
An annuity may be one strategy to consider for a portion of retirement assets.
Annuities can offer features such as:
• Tax-deferred growth
• Potential protection from certain market losses, depending on the type of annuity
• Guaranteed income options with sign on bonus of 30%-50%
• Lifetime income that can help address the risk of outliving your savings
The exact guarantees, fees, withdrawal provisions, surrender periods, and benefits vary by contract.
Example: Suppose you are 55 and have $300,000 in an old 401(k).
Rather than automatically moving the entire amount, we can review your goals and determine whether a portion, for example, $100,000 could potentially be allocated toward a strategy designed to create future guaranteed lifetime income.
The remaining assets could stay invested for growth and liquidity.
The goal is diversification not putting everything into one strategy.
5️⃣ COLLEGE EDUCATION PLANNING
College costs can become a major financial responsibility for parents.
Example: If your child is currently 8 years old and you expect college to cost $100,000 or more in the future, waiting until high school may leave you with a significant funding gap.
We can review potential strategies for:
• Saving for future education costs
• Balancing college savings with retirement goals
• Protecting your retirement while helping fund your children's education
• Building a long-term education strategy based on your time horizon and financial situation
6️⃣ RETIREMENT & LIFETIME INCOME PLANNING
Having $1 million in retirement savings is one thing.
Knowing how to turn that $1 million into sustainable retirement income is another.
Example:
Imagine you retire at age 65 with:
401(k) — $700,000
IRA — $200,000
Savings — $100,000
Total — $1,000,000
The important questions become:
How much can you safely withdraw each year?
What happens if the market drops shortly after retirement?
How will you create income that lasts as long as you live?
How much income will Social Security provide?
How will taxes affect your retirement income?
We can review potential strategies for creating a retirement-income plan that may include Social Security, retirement accounts, investments, annuities, and other financial resources.
