In this mating ritual, both the male and female of the species indicate their fitness for reproduction through their choice of vehicular transportation. The choice of a BMW, or "beemer" as it is colloquially known, is a message to observers of the opposite gender that the driver is of a particular social class typified by a 6-figure income and at least somewhat refined sensibilities. The 3-series number is significant, as it indicates both an appetite for riskier driving habits that are, in turn, a characteristic of individuals available for mating. It is not uncommon for one "beemer" driver, upon sighting a similar driver of the opposite gender, to make these and other assumptions about them, i.e., that they are both available and attractive, or "hot." Mutual interest is confirmed by a pattern of interaction in which the drivers playfully test each other's driving acumen. Upon further communication (e.g., through Craiglist or some other universally available site), the drivers may eventually interact outside of their vehicles and explore their mutual interests in mating. A coupling will typically result in acquisition of a home, children, and, ultimately, trade-up to a 5- or 7- series model.
