web designer needed for a redo of an established site (financial district)

We’re Barbary Coast Consulting. We run The Usual Suspects, a site which aggregates political information about San Francisco, and is found at www.sfusualsuspects.com. It’s updated at least once daily by our team, who scour the internet for stories relating to San Francisco politics, and we attempt to be comprehensive for our readers, yet do our updating work as quickly as possible.

We recently updated our site to include extra bells and whistles, but we have found that the enhancements to our site have led to a slower and less predictable updating process. We are renewing our search for a site designed to be robust for users and easily manipulated by our updaters – and we have not yet found that delicate balance.

We seek an all-star web designer who understands what we’re trying to accomplish, has experience in creating a website that can handle the rigor of being constantly updated, understands how to build something that has only the bells and whistles that we need and nothing more. Can you work with us to understand our needs, minimize our process flow, design something that will be sleek for our readers and intuitive for our updaters? We’re a communications firm, and we need someone who speaks both tech and English and can translate between the two.

A bit about our process: we wake up early and make some coffee. We sit down with our computers, review all the stories that should make it onto Suspects, and get to work. For each story block, we collect a headline and a URL (or headlines and URLs, if the story is in more than one news source), we create a snarky headline and a sentence about What’s Happening, and we identify each link by saying “Chronicle” and “11/02/08”, for instance. (This data allows people to quickly search our archive for stories that are no longer on our front page.) We make a judgment as to where on the page the story should go. We sometimes grab a picture to include in our story. And sometimes we reach back and grab old story collections old that have just become new again with a fresh story today’s newspaper. And sometimes we need to add stories to more than one page – highlighting them on our main page (today’s stories) and our election page (everything having to do with an election), for instance.

As you see, there are lots of things we need to keep track of. Our current system doesn’t make it particularly easy for us, and we want to streamline and automate as many tasks as possible so we can finish our coffee, grab a shower, and get to work on time.

If you think this is something you’d like to work on, please poke around Suspects so you can see what we try to do for our readers each day. (Shouldn’t be too hard to divine that.) Then shoot me an email at clemens@barcoast.com with a few key data points – your name, your location (I want to meet with someone a few times during this process, so Bay Area is essential and San Francisco is even better), the URLs of a few sites you’ve designed, your hourly billing rate, and anything you want to say that illustrates why you think you might be a good match for this project.

And even though it’s a bit early on to finalize this, I’d love to hear what you think the overall project cost would be, based on how you conceptualize your effort. (And both of us, of course, reserve the right to figure out what that cost really will be once we define the exact specifications for this project.)

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sharepoint Trainer/Consultant needed for dumb guy (financial district)

My computer whiz installed a Sharepoint corporate site. This is great, but I don't know how to use it. I bought a book and discussed it with my Computer Guy. ("CG") Problem is, I don't understand what CG is talking about. He is a CG, and I am not.

I know Word, fairly well. Excel, OK. Powerpoint, fine. Outlook, not really but I can read and write email. Outlook Express, forget it. I also don't know Access OR Infopath, nor do I understand Sharepoint.

CG built us a "corporate site." It looks like what the book calls a "team site," but I cannot figure even this factoid out.

I tried to build a "basic web page." I realized very quickly that I simply have no idea what I am doing and he is not communicating with me. I am paying for him to sit with me and speak words I do not understand, sentence after sentence. So I am paying a CG to speak a language I don't understand, learning nothing, and getting frustrated (can you tell?)

BUT: I like my CG and am going to keep him because he has been with me for years. I will eventually understand this program well enough to return to our former relationship, by which I mean that I understood what we are doing.

I do not know what it costs for a Sharepoint consultant. I have very little money right now and need someone to be interested in payment over six months, a little at a time, for perhaps a 3-month part-time gig. My credit is good - you will definitely get paid. But I am not going to pay an expert's rate - I already have one of those. I need someone at my level, both in terms of language and price.

If you have built a few Sharepoint sites before, and you can speak to me at my 3rd grade level (although I am a fairly good learner, just starting from zero), then you are probably qualified for this GIG.

I am throwing out $20 per hour. I figure I could read the manual, so that is your competition and the poorly-reasoned basis for my comp quote. If you think I should pay more, then tell me what you would charge and what guarantees come with that charge. I have hired CL computer people before and am willing to pay for quality, but flakes are not tolerated. A CG who has a week or two to work with me and needs a little extra coin would be ideal.

Ok so I'm trying to create a blog site on Uber.com and thanks to my un-technologically minded self, I am having the hardest time. So, this is a challenge for all you computer geeks out there, to create the kick-assest blog ever!!! I would like my blog to be called "Swimming with Sharks," but you can do basically anything you want to design it, nothing gory or gross though, I was thinking a cool collage of ocean pictures and toy sharks overlapping, but the rest is up to you. You are going to create an account for me, but after you finish, and give me the log in information, I will promptly have to change the password for safety reasons. Thank you and please have my account as being under the name of "Micaela Hoo." Thank you x 10!!!

I currently have a site that was designed several years ago for my restaurant using HTML tables. I'm looking to hire someone to redesign my site using CSS and integrate an open source CMS, like Joomla. I don't need any Flash on the site, and I do have all of the logos, images, and content ready. I will need about 5 pages: a landing page, contact page, location page, history page, and menu page (with subpages).

I need this done as soon as possible. I'm willing to pay either hourly or a flat rate so please send me a quote. I prefer someone local so we can meet but am not opposed to working with someone who's farther. I'm also willing to work with someone trying to get a break into the business since I know how hard that can be (you must be professional though).

To be considered, send me the following:
- a timeline for the project
- a quote
- samples/link to your portfolio

UPDATE: I want a CMS, so I can update the content myself. For all my current updates I'm paying someone to do it for me. We do update regularly with specials and events. MAKE SURE TO SEND US A QUOTE or tell us what information you want to know before you can quote us.

I'm looking to start a small online company in the next couple of months.
I've decided on Microsoft's technology stack: asp.net 2.0, ajax, sql server, etc...
There are lots of technologies / techniques within asp.net that only a real programmer can know the pro's and con's of each when deciding on an implementation path.

I do not intend to code the site myself, but I would like to participate in the design and know what goes into programming it.
I need to be able to estimate resources required, tradeoffs, be able to speak intelligently when deciding whom to hire & what new features to add, timelines, etc...

My intention is to hire a "proof of concept" guy to bring me up to speed, work through the details, consult, and optionally code or lead a small team to develop the project.

Initially, I'll come up with a couple proof of concept projects to review and demonstrate the technologies I've read about.
Specifically: AJAX / Start Pages / Personalization / Reporting / Membership & Role Security / DAL / LINQ / etc...
You'll come up to speed and develop a solution, brief me on the relevant technology, and guide me to implement your solution from scratch on a clean system.
I've written VB utilities and worked with databases in the past so know some basics.

This is a part time position.
Flexible hours as our schedules allow.
This is a "garage" startup on a shoestring budget but if you are interested, this could be a ground floor opportunity.
Send a resume & desired rate.
If you have already worked on an implementation using asp.net 2.0 web parts, dashboards, start-pages or anything similar you think is relevant please let me know.
This is a meet in SF & work at home project!

I am seeking a cool web developer who can help me with the tech for a project I am working on, which is an archive of older web pages. I am really savvy and have built many sites in the past, I just need some help with exactly how I can create this site, what kind of CMS I should be using, how I can make it searchable, etc. I just need someone with a more advanced knowledge than me.

This project is currently a total labor of love, so I can't afford to pay you at the moment, but I shouldn't need too much of your time. I'm also willing to barter for your services. I'm a professional writer and can offer writing services.

Need someone local, who I can meet in person (no off shore people, I won't even respond), patient and with a good sense of humor. You should also have an interest in Internet culture and writing, since the project is related to both.
Thanks!

3D Modeling - Surveyor - laser pointclouds (bayview)

Aeronautica 3D (www.aeronautica3d.com) is in the process of developing a pool of resource talent related to the following subject matter.

- 3D modelers - CATIA, Solidworks, Maya, Lightwave, Studio. Other Programs might be considered - possibly Autocad, REVIT, Autocad/pointcloud, Inventor, etc.
- Land Surveyors - Licensed land surveyors able to sign off on LIDAR (laser scanned topography data)acceptable to any State or Federal requirements.
- 3D laser scanning experience or using 3D laser scanning point cloud software such as Rapidform, Geomagic, Polyworks or any other type of pointcloud software.
- Geo referencing as it relates to 3D laser scanning. Projects may require georeferencing.

If you have any of the above experience (regardless of user level) and are interested in future upcoming projects, please
send your contact information along with a summary of how you will or can participate. Projects can be worked on from home.

The primary work will be mini-projects. The projects are scattered to as many modelers as possible to construct full model assemblies within a 24 hour period. However, you may work on several mini-projects in one 24 hour period. Projects will be compiled in CATIA. All projects that are submitted, must have the sketches and features as associated in CATIA or Solidworks. They must also be dimensioned before submittal.

In many cases, 2D drawings will need to be created from the 3D models. The 3D models are created from the 3D scanning data acquired through a FARO 3D scanner, photos, and possibly photogrammetry points/lines

Aeronautica 3D once owned the Leica HDS3000 3D laser scanner and performed several scanning projects over a two year period. The scanner is now sold, but a new scanner (the FARO LS880) is currently being looked at to resume scanning projects. In addition, any scanner will be looked at for possible rental situations. Aeronautica 3D also owns Rapidform XOR software for CAD creation from 3d pointclouds, however the typical project will only require the pointclouds to be used as a resource to gain dimensions (along with photos), to create the 3D models. This means you do not have to be an expert in pointclouds, but be able to use some pointlcoud software that will enable you to measurement point-to-point to gain basic accurate dimensions of the scanned structures or parts. Rapidform has a free program called Basis that could be used. Aeronautica 3D's Rapidform XOR could also be used. The accuracy of the models you create must be within certain guidelines and the average modeler will have no problem accomplishing this.

The most probable object you will be working on is a house or building. The small projects may consist of only one portion of a house, such as a decorative column on a stair case. Another project may be the steeps and so forth. Final assembly will be accomplished within another 24 hour period. Rendering in another 24 period. Final 3D model, cleaned scan data, and rendered object with 2D drawings, all completed within 3 days.

To the surveyors: a likely project might be to confirm and/or put together the pointcloud/GPS data for geo referencing of a house or cliffs about a house for terrain erosion data. Or most important, confirm that data is acceptable to state or federal laws. Currently we have the understanding that a scanner operator does not have to be a licensed surveyor, but the data must be verified by a licensed surveyor.

To renderers: Buildings are too be photo realistically rendered most likely. If you can render tiled roofs well, I would like to see examples (when viewer is maybe 30 feet and 400 feet from building).

All submitted model file formats must conform or be convertible to CATIA V5.(along with sketches and features – which are part of the way parts are constructed in CATIA). The final rendering is expected to be accomplished in other software, however changes to the model in CATIA must be able to be associated to the other programs for rendering (MAYA,STUDIO, etc)

Please visit www.aeronautica3d.com to see examples of 3d scanning and aircraft models created by Aeronautica 3D using Form-Z.

Another page/link will be added to answer general questions from respondents.

In the case of many responses, please forgive the slow response. Your information will be recorded and entered into the pool of modelers. Aeronautica 3D is looking for modelers worldwide, however payment will be structured so as to limit transactions costs. This means for overseas modelers, wiretransfers will not be available. Paypal and other such systems will be utilized for low cost transactions.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to your submittals! Resumes, summaries, etc – all acceptable. However, please explain how you will best be able to participate. Projects will be starting in a few months or less.

Thank you kindly.

Game Dev/Programmer Needed for Interactive Art Project (Anywhere)

About the project: This project requires the skills of a well-rounded game developer with skills in programming, modeling, networking - as well as having a keen interest in interactive art. This is NOT a creative job, it IS a technical one.

The project is not a game per se, but an interactive networked experiment that probes the idea of “identity” in the age of avatars. It uses game technologies, and will be seen and experienced both in galleries and online.

The final product will essentially be a tool, a game, an interactive playspace to explore the growing relationship between identity and technology.

Very little pay, but lots of recognition and school credit are available.

Your only purpose is to gather the appropriate information as outlined in the “Information For Profiling” document.
