Since 1995, Craig Newmark has kept his community site as a non-commercial, ad-free oasis, an alternative to big, impersonal corporate websites, garnering praise from craigslist readers and press accolades.

Newmark strove to help people with everyday, real world stuff and his efforts were recognized with the "Best Community" Webby Award in 2001.

"Community is nice, but it doesn't pay the bills," Samantha Gates, craigslist's new VP Marketing noted, adding "I believe craigslist users will benefit from the highly targeted ads we plan to deliver."

"Craigslist represents virgin territory for banner ad placement, being the largest internet site not currently running ads, serving 150 million pages and over one million pairs of eyeballs per month."

According to Gates, banner ads will be served to each user based on their personal and demographic profiles, driving much-needed revenue across all craigslist business units.
