While most high-traffic sites are festooned with banners, pop-unders, blinkers (and anything else that might make some coin) Craig Newmark has turned down big money over the years to keep craigslist as a virtual oasis on the internet, a non-commercial meeting place where the little guy (and girl) can get the word out on everyday stuff, without paying fees, without being targeted by marketing departments, and without looking at banner ads!
But on April 1, 2002, all this seemed to change ...
